End-of-Semester Assessment – Individual Research Paper

There are two components to your final course grade: (1) mid-term group presentation, and (2) end-of-semester assessment. To avoid possible confusion and technical difficulties associated with online examination, the end-of-semester assessment will be carried out in the form of an individual research paper. As the semester is coming to the end, you should have learned much about communication, and speech, language, hearing and swallowing disorders. You now should have a good idea what some of the speech/language/swallowing disordersbe able to come up with a research paper independently.

The requirement of individual research paper is as follows:

EACH student will submit ONE individual paper. You must write the paper yourself. Seeing the language difficulty, the paper can be prepared in either Chinese or English, of course preferrably in English. Select a disorder related to speech, language, hearing or swallowing, or anything related to communication (it can be verbal or nonverbal, spoken or written, etc.). In 2 pages, talk about the disorder and its etiology, as well as its effect on communication and quality of life. Design a way to evaluate the severity and characteristics of the disorder, and the effect on communication and patient’s quality of life. Then design one or two intervention methods, or management protocol(s).

For example, for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD), you could talk about the signs and symptoms, underlying cause of PD. Talk about how PD affects one’s communication. As an speech therapist, how do we evaluate/assess its severity (particularly regarding speech). How do we manage them? Talk about medical, pharmaceutical, behavioral treatments that are available to PD, etc.

  4. How does it affect communication / swallowing?
  5. Assessment of symptoms of the disorder (Why are they useful?) (perceptual vs. instrumental)

The paper should be prepared using word processing software such as WPS, MS WORD. Submit your paper in word format. Name your file using pinyin of your name: firstname+lastname.docx. For example, if your name is 陈大伟, then name your file should be named as: chendawei.docx

Please be reminded that plagiarism is a serious offense. All papers will be scanned for similarity via baidu or cnki.

Marking Rubics for the Term Paper

  1. Content (Accuracy, coverage, relevancy of information, etc.) (80%)
  2. Presentation (Format, smoothness of content, etc.) (20%)

本课程最终成绩由两部分构成:(1)期中小组展示,以及(2)期末考核。为避免线上考试可能引发的混淆及技术困难,期末考核将以个人研究论文的形式进行。学期即将结束,相信大家已对交流、言语、语言、听力及吞咽障碍有了较多了解。现在你们应能较好理解某些言语/语言/吞咽障碍,并具备独立完成研究论文的能力。

个人研究论文要求如下:

每位学生需提交一篇独立完成的论文。论文必须由本人撰写。考虑到语言难度,论文可用中文或英文撰写,当然更鼓励使用英文。请选择一个与言语、语言、听力、吞咽或交流相关的障碍(可以是言语或非言语、口语或书面语等形式)。用两页篇幅阐述该障碍及其病因,以及对交流和生活质量的影响。设计一种评估该障碍严重程度、特征及其对交流与患者生活质量影响的方法。进而提出一至两种干预方法或管理方案。

举例而言,若选择帕金森病(PD),可探讨其体征症状、病因,分析PD如何影响患者交流。作为言语治疗师,我们如何评估其严重程度(尤其在言语方面)?如何进行治疗管理?可讨论针对PD的医学、药物及行为治疗等方法。

论文建议包含以下部分:

  1. 引言/背景
  2. 障碍的病因/风险因素
  3. 障碍的发展过程
  4. 如何影响交流/吞咽?
  5. 障碍症状的评估(为何这些评估方法有效?)(主观感知评估与仪器评估)
  6. 障碍的干预
  7. 预后
  8. 结论
  9. 参考文献

论文请使用WPS、MS WORD等文字处理软件撰写,以word格式提交。文件命名请采用拼音形式:名+姓.docx。例如,若姓名为陈大伟,则文件应命名为:chendawei.docx

期末论文评分标准

  1. 内容(准确性、覆盖范围、信息相关性等)(80%)
  2. 呈现(格式、行文流畅度等)(20%)
